May The Force Be With Us

With a spirit of play we approach Contact Improvisation to explore the laws of physics, calling on gravity and momentum to add an abundance of ease, flow and spaciousness to our dance. In true (galactic) style we surrender to and align with the surrounding natural forces readily available to each of us. "tight muscles cannot feel, only effortless, free-flowing muscles are sensuous" (Erick Hawkins)

In the workshop May The Force Be With Us we dive into some principles of Release Technique to give us hands on tools for dissolving tension, finding support and bringing ʻeffortless effortʼ in sharing weight with our partners. Arriving in the present, we warm up to cultivate a soft body and sharp intention, activating lightness and freedom in moving in and out of the floor. We will focus on free flowing movement initiated from an empowered centre and the strong support of spirals, all in dialogue with our partner(s). Expect lots of adventurous play and fruitful contact! Sarah Kate will make a transitional bridge to the jam, this workshop is for ALL species of beginner and experienced dancer.

For this workshop Sarah Kate draws on Release Technique, 8 Hoops Spiral Training and the art of improvisation. Her teaching is influenced by the inspiring work of her mentor Pauline de Groot, one of the most important pioneers of post- modern dance in the Netherlands, who originally brought Contact Improvisation to this country .
